Back in August, we bought beautiful cedar timbers for a dream we’d been holding onto for years—a greenhouse that would feel alive with history and built to last for generations. We imagined sunlight streaming through old glass panes, the smell of cedar, and the satisfaction of growing food in a space we created with our own hands.

But dreams take time. Making solid decisions wasn’t easy. We debated design details, joinery methods, and how to honor the materials we had. By September, we poured the foundation—a huge milestone that made the project feel real. Then winter crept in, and we had to pause. Our cedar timbers are now stacked and stored, waiting for spring like seeds under snow.

Why This Greenhouse Is So Special

The windows aren’t just salvaged—they’re a gift from a dear friend. They came from her 200-year-old barn, a piece of history that would have been lost if not for her generosity. Every pane carries a story, and now those stories will live on in our greenhouse.

Our Plan for Spring

When March arrives, we’ll roll up our sleeves and start carving mortise and tenon joints by hand. It’s slow, deliberate work—the kind that connects you to centuries of tradition. After that:

  • April: Raise the cedar timber frame.
  • May: Install those historic windows and roof panels, sealing everything against the elements.
  • June: Add doors, vents, shelves, and irrigation—ready for planting and life.

Why We’re Taking Our Time

This isn’t just a structure. It’s a labor of love, a commitment to sustainability, and a way to honor craftsmanship. Every decision reflects our values: reuse, respect for tradition, and building something that will stand for decades.
