This week we put the garden to bed for the season. The perennials were cut back, leaving about six inches of stem above the soil so they’ll be easy to find when spring returns. Garlic cloves were planted in neat rows, tucked under the soil to overwinter and sprout when the ground warms. The compost bin was topped up with the last of the yard waste, ready to break down over the coming months into rich soil for next year.
With the outdoor work finished, the garden feels quiet. I’ll miss the daily rhythm of tending plants, but winter shifts the focus indoors.
The extra time has gone into organizing and catching up on projects. Even the craft room, which had been waiting for attention, has been cleaned and set up for new work.
The garden rests outside, and I find myself settling into winter routines inside. It’s a different kind of productivity, but it feels like part of the same cycle—preparing, maintaining, and making space for what comes next.
