Planting Garlic Bulbs in November: A Northern Gardener’s Guide

There’s something magical about planting garlic in late autumn. While most of the garden sleeps under frost, garlic is quietly preparing for spring. For those of us in northern climates, November is the perfect time to tuck garlic bulbs into the soil and let nature do the rest.

Why Plant Garlic in Fall?

Garlic loves the cold. Planting in November gives the bulbs time to establish roots before winter sets in. When spring arrives, they’ll wake up strong and ready to grow. Fall planting also means larger bulbs at harvest and fewer pests compared to spring planting.

Choosing the Right Garlic

• Hardneck varieties are best for northern climates—they tolerate cold and produce flavorful cloves.
• Look for healthy, firm bulbs. Avoid soft or moldy cloves
• Come great varieties; Music i very popular due to its hardy characteristics, but you can also plant more special varieties like Purple Stripe types, Russian Red and Burgundy.

  Step-by-Step Planting Guide

1. • Get the Bed Ready
     Pick a sunny spot with soil that drains well. Toss in some compost to give it a nutrient boost.
   • Break Apart the Bulbs
     Pull the cloves away from the bulb, but don’t peel off that papery skin—it’s their armor!
   • Plant the Cloves
     • Go 2–3 inches deep into the soil
     • Give each clove 6 inches of personal space
     • And yep, the pointy end goes up!
   • Pile on the Mulch
     Cover everything with 4–6 inches of straw or leaves. This keeps the frost and wild temperature swings from messing things up.
   • One Good Watering
     Give your cloves a nice drink before the ground freezes solid.

Winter Care

After mulching, garlic needs no attention until spring. The cloves will rest under the snow, insulated and ready to sprout when the soil warms.
